Emily Carlson gained notoriety in two careers. First as a top level competitive figure skater and also as a broadcast journalist who has appeared on several television stations nationwide.

Carlson grew up near Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was graduated from the Academy of Holy Angels. While attending Holy Angels she earned two gold medals. She rose to the top two percent of competitive figure skaters by passing a series of eight tests in both freestyle skating and moves. This is figure skating’s highest honor at that level.

After retiring from figure skating, Carlson attended the university of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota where she majored in Broadcast Journalism and English. While at St. Thomas Carlson was a member of Campus Scope. She appeared on a weekly news show that was broadcast across the University of St. Thomas campus. She was also active with the Society of Professional Journalists. While at St. Thomas, Carlson completed two internships at KSTP in Minneapolis. The first with the consumer investigations unit, the other at the Minnesota State Capitol in St Paul.

Carlson was awarded Bachelor’s degrees in Broadcast Journalism and English by the University of St. Thomas.

Emily Carlson first appeared on television as a news reporter and news anchor at KEYC in Mankato, Minnesota. Carlson reported on many prominent stories in Mankato. One of the most controversial centered on a proposed smoking ban and the emotional battle on both sides. Carlson is also remembered for her more light hearted segments like “Unique Cooking with Caroline.”

Carlson moved on to work at WICD in Champaign, Illinois as a news reporter. Carlson was a nightside reporter doing many live reports from Champaign County and Vermilion County for the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm newscasts. Carlson also produced and anchored shows at the station.
